Review: House of Ravens (House of Royals #5) by Keary Taylor

House of Ravens (House of Royals, #5)House of Ravens by Keary Taylor

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

***4 1/2stars!***

I love Keary Taylor, that is no secret, and this series has been a favorite of mine. Seriously.

Keary kicks off the finale to her House of Royals Saga with flair if you’ve read the rest of the series…and I do mean ALL the books…then you’ll remember that we left off on a major cliffhanger (one i just want to jump around and point a finger saying I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!) and we pick up exactly where we left off at.

**Henry may be alive!**

This book was just a major unveiling and revelations all around. Henry, Rath (we find out his origins!), the army and it’s creator/leader, Ian, and Ian’s relationship with Alivia. I was caught up in the drama and loved watching it unfold, but I felt as if the ending was rushed, we had 5 books of buildup–for Alivia and Ian’s relationship, for this army and “war” that was coming, and setting up Henry’s return. Then all of a sudden it’s over and the battle was more like a confrontation. Henry is a dichotomy–he’s the one who was so brutal and left the blood smears at Alivia’s old apartment. Then there’s how Alivia knows her daughter is a royal Born and the father, but it’s kind of swept under the rug till the very end where it’s left open.

Alivia’s growth was once again one of my favorite things, she was never stagnant in this series. There was always a new direction to go for her.

I can’t help but to tell you to read this finale, and if you haven’t yet pick. up. this. series!

Title: Slumber (Slumber Duology, Book One)
Author: Christy Sloat
Genre:  YA Fantasy/ Fairytale Retelling
Blurb:
Not all princesses get their happily ever after…
They tell me I killed my boyfriend Phillip in cold blood. I stabbed him twenty one times. I’m only seventeen years old, and I am serving life in Spindle Ridge Asylum for the Criminally Insane.
I don’t remember killing him, so it’s really hard to believe I’m capable of murder. In fact I don’t remember anything before I came to Spindle Ridge, not even my boyfriend.
I can only grasp onto my realistic dreams while the madness of the asylum threatens to pull me under.  I dream I’m a beautiful princess and there is an evil faerie named Maleficent who is bent on my destruction. The dreams are the closest thing I have to memories of my life, except they aren’t real.
I’m crazy. I’m not a princess.
They’re the mad illusions of an irrational teenage girl, right?
They’ve assigned me a new doctor, and she says I can trust her, and that she’ll help me see the truth of who I really am.
When she arrived she brought a new patient, Sawyer, who is everything Spindle Ridge isn’t: exciting, mysterious and beautiful. He promises he’s here to rescue me. Trusting either of them frightens me.
Could it be possible that my dreams are more than just the imaginings of a delusional girl? Could they be truth?

“Happily ever after is hers for the taking.”

Once upon a time I found myself locked away in Spindle Ridge Asylum, punished for a murder I didn’t commit. It was all part of Maleficent’s evil plan. I didn’t remember who I was then … now I do. My name is Aurora, and I am the rightful queen of this realm. Armed with my memories, I’m ready to take charge of my kingdom once more. Happily ever after evades me, yet I long to claim it with my true love, Sawyer, beside me. That fairy tale ending seems impossible with him locked in the thralls of a sleeping curse. As much as I’d love to sit by his bedside and eagerly await a cure, I must first travel into the terrifying Dark Woods to stop Raven from stripping me of all that is rightfully mine. I am not only a queen, but a warrior who will fight for her kingdom. Some may die. Blood will be shed. But when this ending comes, I will settle for nothing less than a blissful ever after.

Excerpt: (From Slumber, Book One of Slumber Duology)

I woke in the middle of the night hearing screams fill the air. This was not uncommon at all, but tonight I wasn’t expecting it. Normally when Adele’s meds are changed, she wakes screaming that she can’t sleep. Adele’s room is across from mine. She is roughly in her twenties and I never learned how she ended up here. I try not to talk to the other patients. I don’t know why it is, but I don’t fit in with these people. To them I’m the murderer and they tend to think less of me. That’s fine. I am what they say I am. That’s why I’m here, right?

They told me I stabbed my boyfriend, Phillip, but I don’t remember doing it. I actually don’t remember Phillip at all. No recollection of having been in a relationship either. I must have killed him or else I wouldn’t be in Spindle Ridge.

Dr. Altman says that I have to believe that I did it or we will never get anywhere. I’ll admit it’s hard to believe that these hands could stab a person twenty times. No matter how I imagined it, it is always hard to believe.

I sat up listening hard for the screams. When they came again I noticed they were not female, they were male. The screams were deeper and reached a longer distance than Adele’s cries ever could. I wondered if the whole building could hear him.

I pulled my covers up over my neck and covered my face. I just wanted to sleep and fall back into the dream I was having. It was beautiful, and if I had my way, I would stay there forever.

 Wait!

I sat up fast. Closing my eyes, I tried to remember the dream to the last second. It wasn’t the same dream as the one’s prior. This dream was different! This dream was me and a boy.
I never dreamt of anyone but my parents and the evil woman. The dream’s soft lullaby came back to me as I remembered where I was.

The smell of fresh grass came across my senses.

The sky so blue as I lay on a blanket. I rolled over and saw the face of a boy. He was everything that Spindle Ridge wasn’t; he was beautiful. He had long, shaggy, but not unruly, hair that touched his collar. When he smiled at me, he looked like a boy in love. In love with me.

“Get up you lazy sack!”

I opened my eyes and was pulled back into the now. I was forced to leave the dream behind as I was being pulled out of bed by two nurses.

These books are SOOO on my TBR list and I know I will be taking advantage of this sale, will you???

Review: House of Judges (House of Royals #4) by Keary Taylor

House of Judges (House of Royals, #4)House of Judges by Keary Taylor

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I am beyond a day late and a dollar short on this review, I know.
I fail at life…Cast your stones.

Okay, the review. Keary Taylor has done it again. I keep wondering how it’s all going to work out, but then as the plot unfolds it’s like

Of course how else is this supposed to go down?? But I digress.

House of Judges if a whirlwind of information, suspense, longing, and giddy anticipation.
No spoilers but just to tease….

The Information: We learn so much more about the vampire world, court life and even Alivia’s family. Being as she is a descendent of the third son, we finally get to meet the old codger, Dorian! Okay so technically he’s forever frozen at a young age, but technicalities….eh.

Suspense: What is going to happen to Alivia, to her house? What about the attacks that have been happening and why would they want to frame her???

Longing: Alivia and Ian are reunited…in prison, but they’re also separated by their cells and their actions. They sooo want each other

but then there’s King Cyrus and his twisted self, and Raheem with his affections and pet name ‘my nofret’. What’s a girl to do?

As for giddy anticipation….well I guess you’ll just have to read the book and suffer the same feelings I went through. 😉

I was transfixed from the very first book not only by her characters, but their development and the plot. *squees and shudders*
Yeah, I know. I get too excited about character development. And this book was a doozy of character and plot development its like how many epiphanies can occur in one novel? And well the little nugget that was unearthed at the end of the book.

Totally saw that coming from the very first, but well yeah there is something BIGGER happening here. And you need to read this book so then we can talk about what-the-ever-loving-frick is going on!!! So go forth my House and devour House of Judges then return to me so we can talk about what is going on here. PLEASE???

Review: Soul of Flame (Imdlaind #4) by Rebecca Ethington

Soul of Flame (Imdalind, #4)Soul of Flame by Rebecca Ethington

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

WYN! <33

I’m going to start off by saying that I absolutely LOVVEEDDDD how much more of Wyn we got in this book, I mean she’s fabulous to begin with, and now she’s dealing with so much. Imprisonment, these powers that have been hidden, then losing them, worrying over Talon, watching and wondering what the heck is going on with Ryland, and what Sain is doing.

The plot buildup holy hallucinations, Batman!!! This was like the tidal wave over buildup, so much that you know–you know–something, someone big is coming, but it still evades us.

I understand why some people were a bit peeved, a lot of this book is repeating events that took place in Scorched Treachery, only from other POVs, we see the other side of the coin now, and what was happening while Joclyn was trapped in Cail’s mind. While Ilyan is on the other side of the world. What had Edmund Cain and Ryland been up to? So questions are answered. I get it. We all want to move forward, resolution, and normally, I’d be right there with you. But in this case I truly think that we needed this bit of insight, perhaps not as much as we got, it could’ve been shorter than the about 50% of the book it is right now, but oh well, I had fun reading it and digging into the breadcrumb clues, scrapping together these new bits of character information and shocking revelations!

No Spoilers people. You know me.

And since there were huge stride in character development (especially of one of my faves, mis Wynifred) I am soooo on board with this book! I mean we finally know about Wyn’s past! and omg, trauma mamma!! No wonder it plagues her sleep. So many secrets, her own and others’.

*giddily claps hands*

Okay I have to stop talking about Soul of Flame because I now need/want to goo read it.
I suggest you go and read it too!
